WMD better than JPEG?

It is quite hard to tell but, according to Microsoft, the JPEG file format needed a good lifting or – better – its complete replacement with a new one. So, Vista will recognize the new Windows Media Photo format. They promise smaller files with less visual defects/artifacts. But nothing is said about the actual support by hardware (by our digital photo cameras).
