You may not remember the name of Transocean Ltd. But you remember the fate of one of their properties: They owned the Deepwater Horizon oil rig when it exploded in the Gulf of Mexico last year. The presidential commission that investigated the accident concluded that BP, Haliburton and Transocean where guilty of taking too many risks to save money.
Did you know that this very company, Transocean Ltd. awareded their top executives with large bonuses for… “best year in safety performance in our company’s history” and for “significantly improving the company’s safety record”.
I kid you not! For these guys, safety must mean:
- 11 people dead on the spot (9 of which were employees of Transocean Ltd.),
- untold millions of dollars spent,
- 200 million gallons of oil flushed into the ocean.
It took them several days to admit that this was insensitive (!). And some more, before some of the executives could decide to donate theses bonuses to the victims of the explosion.
Ashamed? Why should they be ashamed? Maybe because they got caught in the act?
